when faced with the options of either a) coming up with $7,000 extra to pay for Sydney
or
b) staying in boston and graduating a semester early, saving myself approximately $17000 in loans

I've gotta choose staying.

fuck, i guess i was just deluding myself thinking i could go anywhere.

no matter what choice i made, i know i wouldn't be completely happy, but at least way i'll hopefully be a little less fucked when i graduate.

uugghhh, i dont want to let this get to me.

umm has anyone else heard of/seen "Britain's Missing Top Model"? it's another horrible attempt to capitalize on the recent fashion/modeling/reality tv crazes, except without the mind-numbing wonder that is Ms. Tyra Banks. instead, it has pretty girls with awful disabilities competing against one another to be in a Marie Claire spread.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7Cw3T6MKSI

this. is. terrible. a) capitalizing on disabled young women, b) one girl being concerned that her disability isn't NOTICEABLE ENOUGH? and so many other things through this one clip.

if this weren't a real tv show it'd almost be comical, but since it is I'm just pretty horrified by it.

ADDENDUM: Tavi the 12 year old fashionista? anyone smell a scam? additionally, don't you hate it when you love a band for one reason or another and their first album is amazing, and the second is like a sad, watered-down imitation of the first one done by talentless wanna-bes? yeah, hate that.

What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish. (NOTE that most of the ones I've italicized I haven't finished because of lack of time and not lack of interest and I DO plan to finish them someday unless I've noted otherwise)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (I just bought this actually...
Ellen and I scored a double on Bay State Rd, which is probably the prettiest part of our campus. and we're on the river side, so hopefully out room will have a river view! <3<3<3

so shortly, fare thee well south campus. you have been good to me, but after three semesters, it's time for a change of scenery.

now all i've gotta do is save money and go to london. that first part isn't working so well right now; i've been slacking and spending and only have like $40. but no worries, pay goes up over the summer.

friday afternoon i'm hopping on a plane to disney world. all expenses paid because my mom got her bonus at work and still loves me for some strange reason and wants me to be there. this is one of the best perks of having a little brother still young enough to actively want to do this stuff and have me around too.

by the time i get back i only have six days of classes and then a week to study for finals. shit, sophomore year is OVER. but it's gonna be weird, I know legit like seven people who are all staying here for all/part of the summer.

warmth is gradually approaching, rejoice.

I'm waiting to see if one of my suitemates EVER gets out of the shower so I can be at least semi-presentable for classes. in the meantime, there's this:

Go to http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/2003.htm and change the number in the URL to reflect the year you graduated high school to get the top 100 songs of that year.
Karna gave me his band's CD and it's really good. they're totally insane of course, but I really hope they keep going. they were in NME this summer and touring, and are part of a documentary with other taqwacore bands. my two favorite songs so far are "Sharia Law in the USA" and "Suicide Bomb the GAP".

so basically, go Karna <3

I saw Mika friday night with Berry &Chantal, and it was the MOST FUN ever. Mika is the most infectiously adorable human being on the face of the planet; he obviously loves performing and loves his fans. He loves being a little controversial but still so friendly and cute, a bit of a diva but in the best most entertaining way possible. the minute he walked onstage, everyone started smiling and didn't stop till we left the theater.

the finale was HILARIOUS and soooo awesome.
<lj-embed id="2" />

there were animal costumes, people dancing on stage, CONFETTI, and GIANT BALLOONS.
skngiorhneointhoehrm.
It was AMAZING and I'd do ANYTHING to go see him again. I'd MARRY that crazy man.

the hangover that is just now going away from later that night, however, is something I could have lived without.
eh, c'est la vie.

so Ellen took me to the Blonde Redhead concert as an early birthday present last night, and it was AWESOME. the opening band (whose name I can't remember at the mo) was kinda of weird, but I think I liked them. the lead singer chick had maracas, that's all that matters I guess. but blonde redhead was soooo good, they played for a really long time and had a five song encore. the only thing that bothered me was that they chose some really slow/down songs for the encore, so it was kind of like... okay, this is nice, but you ended the actual set on such a high note, there should have been better follow up. but anyway I find the guitarist/male singer strangely attractive... and Ellen and I made friends with some interesting people during the show, it was hilarious.

in short, I have an awesome roommie.

and I get to see MIKA!! with Berry!! in less than two weeks!

honestly, it was a really good night, especially after all the shit I went through Friday, I needed a serious break. it was fun and relaxing, as opposed to my near-breakdown status at the start of the weekend.

now if only I could figure out A) what the hell I'm supposed to be doing for my compsci homework, and B) why the poetry handbook I need for writing is no where to be found anywhere.

can I just say that I think I'm going to love my creative writing class? the prof. is really cool and really funny, but he knows what the hell he's doing- he runs the playwrights theater on campus, and that's where we have our class. and I'm especially relieved to see that this is still a real college course- no silly little prompts or cutesy writing assignments to take up time, but the most simplistic, "write a poem, any kind you like, just make sure it has some sort of repetition in it. hand it in on wednesday, and I'll tell you how to make it better."

because I mean, honestly, anyone can do the elementary school-esque, stereotypically "creative" writing prompts that are like "describe one of your family members transforming into an animal!" or what have you. no one in the real world is going to read that kind of structured exercise and think "wow, this is amazing!" unless you're the next goddamn ezra pound. in the class I'm taking, you have to come up with something entirely your own with the most minimal influence from the teacher as to topic, style, and form.

halle-friggin-lujah.

so ellen and i figured out that we're paying $11,640 for room and board at BU, and therefore it would probably be so much cheaper to live in an off campus apartment. even though I'd lose a $2000 scholarship, it might still be worth it if I spend under $9000. I'm kind of uncertain though- and apartment seems like a lot of money/responsibility.

and we both want to study abroad next year, so that could be more difficult too. but BU apartments are over $10,000, which sucks. although you don't need a dining plan. I don't know anyone who wants to keep campus housing- it's not that it's that bad, just there's not a lot of room, and if you live on campus and not in an apartment, you're required to have a dining plan.

but the study abroad thing- 13 weeks in london, or 14 weeks in dublin? I'm kind of leaning towards london, purely because we all know how I love cities, and while dublin is urban london's got in beat for being metropolitan and international. I want to go sooooo badly- there are internship programs, and they offer financial aid, and and andandandand I REALLY WANT TO LIVE THERE.

::sigh:: I should stop whining/rambling about this and do work.

I love living in Boston.
the Sox just won, and Ellen and I only had to walk up the road to watch everyone pour out onto the street in what can only be described as pandemonium. drunken Bostonians are the best kind. there were, of course, police cruisers everywhere with lights flashing and baracades set up, and a damn van ready to take people away. everyone was hysterically funny, screaming and high-fiving and hugging random strangers on the street. but Ellen pointed out that for her, this was so crazy, so insane, but so much fun- she's never lived any where that actually has a sense of community, even over stupid things like a baseball game.

there are drunk people right outside my window, and cars driving by honking horns, people leaning out and yelling. interspersed with the normal sounds of traffic on the pike. I love being able to hear them, drunken revelry, laughing.

I don't care if it seems stupid and pointless because it's over a baseball game. I don't care if you think that it's obnoxious and useless and low-class or whatever. this is my favorite place because as much aggression as the average city fosters in people, Boston has this amazing capacity for joy.

and I am sitting in the middle of it; of life, hundreds and maybe thousands of people around me all happy basically just for the sake of being happy.

I fucking love this city, and I couldn't stand to be anywhere else.
